Colours

Is it possible to dye coloured or printed fabrics?
Fabrics that are coloured or printed can be dyed. It's a technique known as over-dyeing. If you want to dye a light solid colour clothing, all you have to do is follow the regular directions for using Rit All-Purpose Dye (if dyeing cotton, linen, silk, wool, nylon, ramie, or rayon) or Rit DyeMore (if dyeing garments that have more than 35 per cent polyester, acrylic or acetate). Follow our instructions on how to change the colour of clothing if you want to (a) dye a dark solid garment a lighter colour or (b) entirely change the colour of a garment from one solid colour to another (for example, from purple to blue).

If you're over-dyeing a design or logo, the colour you choose for over-dyeing will mix with the fabric's existing colour(s) to generate new colours. To put it another way, colour-mixing principles apply. Consider how a colour will blend with the other colours in the pattern when choosing a colour. For instance, if you dye a pink flower design item using blue dye, the pink flowers will turn purplish (blue and pink produce purple), but the remainder of the fabric would dye blue. Even if you over-dye a dark colour onto a patterned clothing, the colour may appear lighter along the patterned area.

Is it possible to change the colour of a garment by over-dyeing it with a different dye?
If the garment you're dying has a light colour and you want to make it darker, all you have to do is follow the regular directions for using Rit All-Purpose Dye (if dyeing cotton, linen, silk, wool, nylon, ramie, or rayon) or Rit DyeMore (if dyeing garments that have more than 35 per cent polyester, acrylic or acetate).

Follow our instructions on how to change the colour of clothing if you want to (a) dye a dark garment a lighter colour or (b) entirely change the colour of a garment from one colour to another (for example, from purple to blue).

Why do I have to add another colour while over-dyeing another colour with black?
Our dyes are made with the assumption that they will dye white or light-coloured fabric the same colour as the dye. When our Black or Graphite dye is applied to a coloured fabric, the fabric's original colour may come through. To offset the overtones of the present colour, we propose applying an additional colour (as shown in our chart here). If you're dyeing red fabric, for example, we recommend adding some green colour to your dye bath. Adding a green dye to the dye bath will offset the red on the fabric, as blending red and green produce black.

Can I dye a black garment white?
We do not sell white dye, unfortunately. If the garment you want to dye is made of natural fabric (such as cotton, linen, silk, wool, or ramie), you can use Rit Color Remover to remove the black colour. The clothing will now be white or off-white in colour. Then, to soften the colour, wash it with Rit Whitener Brightener. Unfortunately, if your garment contains more than 35% synthetic material (polyester, acrylic, or acetate), you won't be able to remove or whiten the colour.

Do you have any formulas for Rit colours that are no longer available?
Yes! Our colour formula page has them in the "Rit Collections" selection. Choose "Vintage Colours" from the drop-down menu.

To obtain a rich, dark colour, such as black or navy, what unique dying processes should be used?
We've dedicated an entire page to assisting you in achieving the most vibrant colour imaginable. It can be found here. The following are the three most important factors: (1) use the stovetop method, (2) increase the dye amount, and (3) after dyeing, apply Rit ColourStay Dye Fixative (but before washing).

Dyeable fabrics and materials.

What will Rit dye?
Rit All-Purpose Dye can be used to colour:

  • Natural fibre fabrics, such as cotton, linen, wool, silk, ramie, and modal, are machine washable.
  • Synthetic fibre fabrics, such as nylon, rayon, and viscose, are machine washable.
  • Cotton-based fabrics that can be washed
  • Polyester cotton blends with less than 35% polyester are examples of synthetic blends.
  • Fabric Cotton canvas sneakers and silk satin shoes are examples of footwear.
  • Unfinished Furniture, picture frames, mouldings, shutters, wicker baskets, straw, rattan, and sisal squares are all examples of wood and wicker.
  • Dried Cornhusks, Milkweed, Goldenrod, Thistle, Foxtails, and Pine Cones are examples of naturally dried plants and pine cones.
  • Paper for paper crafts and card making, such as watercolour paper and newspaper
  • Unfinished clay, cement, cork, feathers, fabric lampshades, paraffin (powder dye only), cotton and nylon rope, sand, and seashells are examples of miscellaneous items.
  • Dried beans, eggshells, seeds, and macaroni are examples of food for crafts.

Rit DyeMore for Synthetics has the ability to dye:

  • Synthetic fibre fabrics: Such as polyester, acetate, and acrylic.
  • Synthetic Blends: For example, polyester cotton blends that contain more than 35% polyester.
  • Buttons, fasteners, golf balls, lacrosse sticks, and 3D printing goods are all made of nylon-based plastics.
  • Miscellaneous plastic items: Legos or sunglasses, for example.

What will Rit not dye?

  • Metallic fibres, fibreglass, and spandex
  • Fabrics that have been bleached or stained badly
  • Rubber-backed fabrics are available.
  • Specially treated fabrics, such as waterproof or stain-resistant fabrics
  • Fabrics with labels Washable Only dry clean or wash in cold water.

Can I colour a fabric that says "Cold Water Wash" or "Dry Clean Only"?
Rit should only be used on materials that can be machine washed in hot water. If a cloth is labelled "Cold Water Wash" or "Dry Clean Only," it is possible that it will be damaged if coloured in hot water. In clothes with interfacing and linings, "Dry Clean Only" materials are frequently utilised. These textiles have the potential to shrink, resulting in puckering and undesirable outcomes.

Is it possible to colour a shirt with a graphic logo?
Yes! The colour you choose to over-dye with, on the other hand, will mix with the existing colour (s) in the logo to generate new colours. To put it another way, colour-mixing principles apply. Consider how a colour will interact with the colours in the logo when choosing a hue. If you dye a white item with a pink flower design with a blue dye, the pink flowers will turn purplish (blue and pink produce purple), while the rest of the fabric will dye blue. Even if you over-dye a dark colour onto a patterned clothing, the colour may appear lighter along the patterned area.

What about textured fabrics? Are they difficult to dye?
Waterproof and stain-resistant coatings keep the dye from penetrating by preventing it from being moistened by water. If the fabric is dyed, it will be up to 50% lighter than the package colour. Dying these fabrics is not recommended. Wash-and-wear, permanent press, and crease-resistant treatments prevent dyeing, resulting in lighter colours. Before dying a new fabric or garment, it is recommended that you wash it in warm water with laundry detergent. This aids in the removal of any finishes that could obstruct colour absorption.

Is it possible to colour a white shirt with sweat and deodorant stains?
Stains will not be covered by Rit. However, if you remove the stains beforehand, you can still dye the object an equal colour. To do this, we recommend using Rit Super Stain Remover or Rit Color Remover.

Can I dye jeans?
That's an excellent question! Yes, you certainly can! On our website, we offer a page dedicated to straightforward instructions on how to dye jeans. You can go to that page by clicking here.

Can Rit cover stained or sun-faded areas?
A discoloured or sun-faded area will not be covered by Rit. If the colour has faded, try removing it with Rit Color Remover. The overall colour will be removed or reduced, resulting in an off-white or cream colour. After that, re-dye the item.

Is Rit able to cover bleach stains?
Bleach causes fabrics to deteriorate, making it difficult to dye.

If you still want to dye the clothing, you could attempt removing the colour with Rit Color Remover before dying it. We cannot, however, promise that this will work.

Will the usage of Rit cause fabrics to deteriorate?
Certainly not! Rit contains nothing that may weaken, damage, or deteriorate any textile fibre.

Is it possible to colour upholstered furniture?
We don't advocate using Rit to dye upholstery cloth since the extra dye must be removed once the dye has been applied. With furniture, this can be tough, and if the extra dye isn't entirely removed, it can rub off on clothing. Rit works best with a cloth that can be removed from the furniture and soaked in a dye bath, such as slipcovers or pillow coverings. The fabric can then be cleaned and washed as required to remove any remaining dye.

Can I dye the carpet with Rit?
We do not advise you to colour your carpet in your home. Carpet dyeing is best done by specialists who use high-temperature, high-pressure equipment, as well as the particular chemicals and surfactants required to apply the colour. Uneven colour and crocking, which means the dye may rub off if not applied with enough high pressure and heat, are two issues you may encounter while dyeing your carpet at home. However, if you only need to colour a little area, you might use our spot dyeing method. If this doesn't work, you'll have to call the carpet professionals mentioned above and pay them to try to fix the discolouration, so only use this method if you're ready to take that chance.

Why can't I colour a rug with a rubber backing?
The colour will be absorbed by the rubber backing on rugs, but it will not be retained. As a result, the dye may leak onto your carpet or flooring in the future. If you decide to give it a shot, proceed with caution and thoroughly wash the rug before using it.

Will Rit colour my clothing's thread or stitching?
The thread used in the manufacture of garments is frequently 100 per cent polyester. Unlike Rit DyeMore, Rit All-Purpose Color does not dye polyester. As a result, if you use Rit All-Purpose Dye, the thread will stay the same colour. This can result in a fascinating design effect, but it's crucial to remember if that's not what you want.

Is Rit suitable for infants?
For dyeing children's clothing, Rit is entirely safe. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Rit is non-toxic.

Is it possible to colour nylon spandex blends?
The nylon portion of the fabric will be dyed by Rit. The spandex fibres, on the other hand, will not absorb the dye. However, because spandex is usually only a tiny fraction of the fabric blend, it can be dyed, which may result in a lighter colour depending on the amount of spandex used.

Can I dye shoes?
Yes! Rit can colour cotton canvas shoes as well as satin shoes with silk lining. The shoes must be spotless and stain-free. Here's how to do it.

Is it possible to dye wood?
Yes! Rit is a stain that can be used on raw wood and wicker. The advantage of using a dye rather than paint is that the wood grain can be seen through the colour. Plus, unlike paint, wood and wicker can absorb dye, so the colours won't chip or peel!

Is it possible to colour Ugg® boots?
Sheepskin is used to make Ugg Boots, which can be coloured with Rit. Use a sink or a bucket to collect the water. However, no additional salt should be added. Make sure to wash the boots first to get rid of any dirt, then dip them into the dye bath while they're still wet. They will not float as a result of this. Allow 30-60 minutes in the dye bath, moving them around to achieve an even colour. Rinse in cold water well before washing in warm water with a light detergent. Rinse once more. Allow for thorough drying, which may take several days.

Is it possible to dye deer hair?
Yes, deer hair dyeing is fairly widespread, particularly among fishing organisations. Fly ties are made from deer hair. Deer hair is dyed in the same way that feathers are dyed.

Is it possible to dye felt for a pool table?
The majority of pool table felt is made of a nylon and wool combination that may be coloured with Rit. We have no way of knowing how the water and dye will alter the pool table's surface. They have the potential to cause irreversible harm. If you're brave enough to try it, we recommend gently cleaning the felt with warm water and a light detergent. Rinse well. Apply the dye gently to the wet felt using a sponge while it is still wet. The dye water must be quite hot. Add 1 bottle of dye in 1-2 gallons of water heated to 140 degrees. Allow to dry completely before wiping away any excess surface colour with a clean wet towel.

Is it possible to dye swimsuits?
Swimsuits can be dyed with Rit. Rit DyeMore may be your best option because most swimsuits are constructed of nylon or polyester. Keep in mind that if your swimsuit is exposed to chlorine from a pool, the chlorine may cause colour loss. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause the colour to fade.

Is it possible to dye Vellux® fabric?
Yes! Vellux is frequently used in the production of blankets. Originally, nylon strands were embedded in a reinforced urethane foam layer to create a pile on both sides. However, polyester fibres have recently been used in the production of certain Vellux. Both of these fibres can be dyed with Rit DyeMore. Laundering in cold water is recommended by certain manufacturers, however, dyeing requires hot water, so check the label for washing instructions.

Is it possible to dye animal toys with Rit?
Rit is non-toxic and does not contain any potentially dangerous ingredients. However, because it is not a vegetable or food-grade dye, we do not suggest it for chewable toys.

Is it possible to bleach wood with Rit Color Remover?
Unfinished wood can be whitened with Rit Color Remover before staining with brighter Rit colours. The completed dye colours appear brighter and cleaner as a result of the whiter base. Furthermore, if you've dyed a piece of wood and don't like the colour or made a dyeing error, you can remove the dye colour by mixing 1 or 2 packets of Rit Color Remover with 1 gallon of very hot water (160 degrees). Stir everything together thoroughly. Avoid inhaling the vapours. Allow one to two hours for the paint to dry on the wood. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and allow to air dry. Then apply a new dye colour to the wood.

Is it possible to dye my raincoat?
Yes, as long as the raincoat's fabric is dyeable. Raincoats, on the other hand, are usually treated with a water-repellent finish. The dye will be repelled by these finishes.

Dyeing Specifics

What can I do to prevent colour bleeding?
Use Rit ColourStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie, or rayon, but before rinsing and laundering.

Rinse the fabric in warm water before rinsing it in cooler water till the water runs clean for all other fibres.

Can I use your dye or laundry care products in my front-loading washing machine?
Rit products are safe to use in front-loading washers. Complete instructions can be found here! We don't recommend dyeing extra-large or multiple items in a front-loading washing machine.

How do I get an even colour?
Make sure the dye bath is large enough for the fabric to flow freely while being swirled for even colour. You can get splotches or light and dark regions if it's overly bunched up. In addition, regularly moving the fabric while dying ensures consistent dye exposure.

How can I determine the dye's colour?
If you're using Rit All-Purpose Dye, a scrap piece of fabric from the item you're dyeing is the most realistic test. You may also do a colour test by dipping a paper towel into the dye bath. Paper towels are made up of fibres that react to colour in the same manner that cotton does.

If you're using Rit DyeMore Synthetic Dye, start by bringing the dye bath to a near-boiling temperature on your stove. Use a scrap piece of cloth from the garment you're dyeing and let it in the dye bath for 5 minutes for the most realistic test. If you don't have a scrap piece of fabric, try a fabric swatch with a similar fibre makeup to the garment (if available).
Unfortunately, due to the intricacies of dye synthetics, testing colour with a paper towel will not offer you an accurate depiction of how the colour will appear on your synthetic clothing. If you don't have a fabric swatch on hand, it's worth a shot, but keep in mind that it won't give you a perfect match.

Use extra dye if the colour is too light; if the colour is too dark, add more water.

If more dye is required, add it in 1/4 to 1 teaspoon increments, depending on the formula and the amount of fabric to be dyed.

If the colour is excessively dark, add 1 to 2 cups of hot water at a time, depending on the size of the dyebath and the amount of fabric being dyed.

How do I know how much dye I'll need?
It is determined by the weight of the item being dyed. One box of powder dye or four ounces of liquid dye will colour one pound of dry-weight fabric, as a general rule (about 3 yards of lightweight fabric or two adult large t-shirts). Use less dye to get a paler colour. Double the amount of dye for a darker or brighter colour. For darker colours, we recommend at least 1 bottle of Rit All-Purpose Dye or 2 bottles of Rit DyeMore. We recommend using at least one bottle of Rit DyeMore when dyeing 100 per cent polyester.

You can use a food or home postal scale to estimate the weight of the item.

Weigh yourself holding the item if you're buying larger goods like bedding or curtains (s). The weight of the object is the difference (s).

I just dyed the fabric in my washer, and it came out with uneven colour. What went wrong?

This is usually caused by (a) a combination of too much fabric and not enough water in the washing machine, or (b) the cloth being twisted during the dyeing cycle. We don't recommend dyeing extra-large or multiple items in a front-loading washing machine. Check your fabric periodically when dyeing in a top loader machine. Stop the machine and untwist it if it becomes twisted.

If you're dealing with cotton, linen, silk, wool, or ramie and don't like the colour, use Rit Color Remover to get rid of it. It will change the colour of the fabric to white or cream. You can then re-dye the item to a different colour!

What is the best way to remove colour from my hands or skin?
Our most often asked question! Take a hot shower and use ordinary bath soap if possible. To exfoliate it off quickly, mix sugar with hand lotion or use a body scrub. If you still have dye on your hands and want to remove it quickly, use a cleanser (such as Comet) and a small amount of water on a brush. A second wash in warm, soapy water will guarantee that no cleanser is left on your hands to dry or damage your skin.

What type of salt should I use?
Any table or cooking salt, including kosher and sea salt, can be used to colour.

What is the best container for dying in a sink or bucket?
You can use a plastic container, a glass container, or a stainless steel sink if you don't mind it getting soiled. When dyeing the goods, the container must be large enough for them to move around freely. Dyeing in a porcelain or fibreglass sink is not recommended. After you've finished dyeing, make sure you clean your container well. It's always a good idea to keep dyeing containers separate from cooking containers. If you must dye in a container that is also used for cooking, you should clean it with chlorine bleach or a powdered cleaning afterwards.

My dyed fabric has little spots or specks of dye on it. What happened?
One of three things commonly causes dye streaks or specks: (1) powder dye was not completely dissolved in water before being added to the dye bath or washing machine; (2) dye was put straight onto the cloth without first being dissolved in water, or (3) the garment was not consistently agitated or moved during dying.

If you're dealing with cotton, linen, silk, wool, or ramie and don't like the colour, use Rit Color Remover to get rid of it. It will change the colour of the fabric to white or cream. You can then re-dye the item to a different colour!

Rit Color Remover does not work on synthetic materials, unfortunately (such as polyester, acrylic or acetate). You might, however, overdye it with a deeper colour.

Is it necessary to wash fabrics or garments before dyeing?
Yes! It makes no difference whether the thing is new or old. Any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption are removed by pre-washing in warm, soapy water.

What methods are used to remove dye from containers and utensils?
To remove any colour that may have remained in the washing machine or on mixing vessels, use chlorine bleach or a cleanser containing bleach, such as Comet or Ajax.

In the dyebath, how long should I leave my item or fabric?
It all depends on the hue and fabric you want. We recommend 30 to 60 minutes of constant stirring to get the colour on the box or bottle. We recommend 10 to 20 minutes for lighter hues. Even if the fabric appears to have attained the appropriate shade in a shorter time than expected, the dye must be absorbed into the fabric for at least 30 minutes for 100% polyester and polyester blends. Because nylon dyes swiftly and darkly compared to other fabrics, the time spent in the dye bath is significantly reduced. When wet, colours appear darker and will dry lighter. So keep that in mind before you take something out of the dye bath.

What is causing my dyed curtains to fade so quickly?
Direct sunlight may cause colour loss more quickly than typical wear if your curtains were coloured with Rit. To double the colour retention while dyeing curtains, use Rit ColourStay Dye Fixative after dyeing (but before washing).

Is Rit safe to use in a food-handling container?
Because Rit is not a food-grade dye, we do not recommend using a food-grade container. If you must use the container for cooking after dyeing, it is recommended that you clean it with chlorine bleach. We would advise you to dedicate one container to dyeing.

What if I don't like the colour of my fabric once it's been dyed?
If you're dealing with cotton, linen, silk, wool, or ramie and don't like the colour, use Rit Color Remover to get rid of it. It will change the colour of the fabric to white or cream. You can then re-dye the item to a different colour!

Rit Color Remover does not work on synthetic materials, unfortunately (such as polyester, acrylic or acetate). You might, however, overdye it with a deeper colour.

What is the best type of container for dyeing on the stovetop?
A stainless steel or enamel saucepan is recommended. Aluminium pots can also be used, although the salt in the dye might cause the aluminium to get scratched and pitted, so using an old pot you no longer care about could be the best option in this scenario. It's always a good idea to keep dyeing containers separate from cooking containers. If you must dye in a container that is also used for cooking, you should clean it with chlorine bleach or a powdered cleaning afterwards.

What temperature should the dye bath's water be?
What an excellent question! Rit enjoys using hot water because it loosens the fibres of the garment, allowing the colour to penetrate. We recommend washing your fabric in the hottest water that is safe for it. However, if you're looking for particular temps, look no further!

Use Rit All-Purpose Dye at 140° to 160°F (60° to 71° C) to dye natural fibres (such as cotton, linen, silk, or wool). If the tap water isn't hot enough, boil some water and add it to the dye bath.

Use Rit DyeMore for Synthetics at 180° to 220°F (82° to 104°C) for dyeing a material that contains more than 35 per cent synthetic material (such as polyester, acrylic, or acetate). To accomplish so, you'll need to use the stovetop dyeing procedure.

Why didn't Rit Colour Remover get rid of the stain on my curtains?

Due to the fact that curtains are frequently exposed to direct sunlight, some manufacturers may opt for more colourfast dyes and fabric finishes. Even with chlorine bleach, these colours can be difficult to remove.

Will Rit leave a stain in my washer? What's the easiest way to get dye out of a laundry basket?
We understand if this is your first time using dye in a washing machine. Who wants a washing machine that is purple? Maybe it's us. Nonetheless, we guarantee that Rit will not discolour any metal components on your machine permanently. Rit has been used in washing machines for decades, beginning with the invention of the electric washing machine in the 1950s. The slogan "Push Button Color!" was coined by us. However, we urge that you clean up quickly after dyeing to guarantee that none of your washer's plastic parts gets stained. Because dyes can seep into these regions, wipe the inside of the lid and pour a little bleach through the internal dispenser (if there is one). Then fill the washer to the highest possible water level and choose the hottest water temperature setting. Add 2 cups of chlorine bleach to the detergent and run a complete wash cycle with 3 old towels.

Products and Purchase

What is your strategy for dealing with high-priority compounds in your products?
We take product safety seriously and follow a strict approach to prioritise and limit the use of priority chemicals in our goods. Priority chemicals are those that have the potential to harm your health or the environment. If there's a danger that an ingredient won't be safe, we won't use it. As a result, we can confidently state that all of our colours are non-toxic.

Is Rit subjected to animal testing?
We're vegan, thus neither the ingredients nor the completed Rit goods are tested on animals. In fact, we design our goods to be safe for you, your house, your pets, and the environment, so no animals are harmed in the process.

What is the difference between liquid dye and powder dye?
In terms of colour and dye performance, there is no change. The liquid dye is more intense than the powder dye since it has already been dissolved in water. As a result, when using liquid dye, you only need half as much. Also, because the liquid dye is pre-mixed, you won't have to dissolve it in boiling water as you would with powder dye before using it in the dye bath. One bottle of liquid dye equals two boxes of powder dye, as a rule of thumb.

What are the ingredients in Rit's dyes?
Our tried-and-true dye formula includes a mix of acid, dispersion, and direct dyes, as well as sodium chloride. These different dye classes can be used to dye a wide range of fabrics and materials. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has confirmed that our colours are non-toxic.

What is the life expectancy of Rit?
Rit's shelf life is indefinite. If you're keeping liquid dyes, make sure the cap is tight to avoid evaporation. Powder dyes must be kept in a cold, dry location. You can store powder colour in an airtight container after it has been combined with water.

Are Rit products suitable for use in septic or sewer systems?
Yes! Both sewer and septic systems are safe to use with Rit products.

Is it possible to dye with both powder and liquid dye in the same dye bath? Is it possible to swap them out?
Yes! It's fine to mix liquid and powder colours in a custom colour formula if you only have one in liquid and the other in powder. To determine which quantities to use, consult this conversion chart. Is it okay if I use your dye or laundry detergent in my front-loading washer?

Rit products are safe to use in front-loading washers. Complete instructions can be found here! We don't recommend dyeing extra-large or multiple items in a front-loading washing machine.

Where can I get a copy of your safety data sheets (SDS)?

All of our safety and data sheets can be found here:
